30 April. The last night before May. The night when darkness dances one final time before the light returns.
Across centuries and borders, the last night of April has carried a single whispered warning: do not go out alone tonight.
In Germanic folklore, Walpurgis Night — Walpurgisnacht — was the most dangerous night of the year. Witches gathered on mountaintops, most famously on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains of Germany, to celebrate their great sabbath. They danced around bonfires, made pacts with shadows, and ruled the night until dawn broke them apart.
The Church named this night after Saint Walpurga, an 8th-century abbess whose feast day fell on May 1st — a deliberate attempt to overwrite the old magic with holy light. But the darkness remembered.
The Bonfire and the Witch
In villages across Germany, Scandinavia and Central Europe, people lit enormous bonfires on April 30th — not to celebrate, but to protect. Fire kept the witches away. Fire kept the shadows at bay.
And yet — who were these witches, really?
Women who knew the herbs. Women who healed. Women who lived alone in the forest and answered to no one. Women who were too much — too wise, too wild, too free.
Sound familiar?
Walpurgis Night and the Gothic Soul
There is something in the gothic heart that has always understood Walpurgis Night. It is the night that belongs to those who live between worlds — between light and dark, between the seen and the unseen.
It is a night for black lace and candlelight. For old books and older magic. For wearing something beautiful and dangerous and entirely your own.
At Victorian Velvet, we believe every night can carry a little Walpurgis magic — the courage to be exactly who you are, unapologetically and beautifully dark. 🖤
